Printable Tracking Markers for VFX and CGI Workflows
Blauw Films
Creating flawless visual effects (VFX) starts with good tracking. Accurate motion tracking is the key to blending digital effects with live-action footage. These Tracking Markers are made to give you clean tracking data.
What are Tracking Markers?
Tracking markers are visual reference points placed in the frame while filming. These markers are used in post-production to track the movement of objects or the camera. Once the footage is processed, software like After Effects reads the markers. This way, 3D models and other digital elements stay aligned with real-world footage.
These Tracking Markers are especially useful in live-action film production.
How to Use Tracking Markers
Using tracking markers is simple, but following the right steps ensures your footage is ready for VFX work. Here’s how you can start using Blauw Films’ Tracking Markers:
- Choose a Marker: Choose a colour and layout of tracker that is best visible
- Print the Markers: Print the markers on a material suitable for your project. This can be thick matte paper, sticker paper or magnets.
- Place the Markers: Before filming, place the markers on the objects or in the scene you want to track. Be sure to spread them out evenly across different surfaces.
- Film Your Scene: Record your footage with the markers in place. Make sure they are visible throughout the shots you want to track.
- Import to Software: Import the footage into your VFX software, like After Effects.
- Track the Motion: Use the software to track the movement of the markers. This allows you to attach digital elements or effects that follow the motion of your scene.
Blauw Films has tutorials on how to track your footage. This is part 1 of a 3 part tutorial: How to Replace props with a 3D model.
