Atmospheric Horror to Welcome October
Tragic Nightmares await you…
Blauw Films
The Concept
It’s my favorite season of the year again! Time for a spooky atmosphere and to welcome nightmares into our lives. If you’re on the hunt for a spooky short film to watch you’re in the right place.
Short Film by Blauw Films is cryptic and uncanny. This film will, to many, be a confusing watch that will bring you conflicting emotions. Thematically the film explores a slow-boiling fear of parenthood. A fear of creating fragile life which needs to be protected no matter what.
I’d like to stress that this is a film that should be experienced. Not directly understood.
That is truly the best way to connect with the moody atmosphere of the film.
A variety of art and media have influenced Short Film by Blauw Films, from projects such as Possession (1981) by Andrzej Żuławski to The Brood (1979) by David Cronenberg. Aesthetically there was a strong influence coming from November (2017) by Rainer Sarnet which created an incredibly moody atmosphere in its black and white darkness.
However for all lovers of eerie and atmospheric horror we cannot forget the influence of Eraserhead (1977) by David Lynch. This is a film that pushed all of us in the crew to do what we did. We gained the confidence that we needed to experiment in all areas of production. From using moldy vintage lenses to shooting in the most crowded spaces we could find. The influence of Eraserhead is truly immeasurable, not only to the production of Short Film by Blauw Films but also to all filmmakers exploring the flexibility of the medium.
Behind the Scenes Photographs
The weeks in which this project was prepared and shot were a wonderfully spooky time for all of us. The drab London climate allowed us to truly bathe in the feeling of horror, as well as continuously discuss all of our favorite horror films and stories.
Short Film by Blauw Films was a passion project foremost, which allowed us to explore the “avant-garde” and surrealist imagery in our minds freely. And when I say freely, I mean as freely as it gets. There was nothing or no-one interfering with our creative process. This has also been the reason for it gaining the title “Short Film by Blauw Films”. It’s an untitled film that expresses our ethos as young artists with nothing to lose.
Conclusion
While the film didn’t have a huge viewership upon release, it is still a project that I hold dear to my heart. And I hope that for those of you looking for something spooky to watch during these autumn months, this will be a nice addition to your watch-list!
